Birthday Fun

I love surprises, but I am the worst at actually allowing people to surprise me. For example, when the Mr. and I were dating, we talked about marriage a lot, and so I knew a proposal was coming. I just didn’t know when and how, and I wanted to be surprised. The week beforeΒ he proposed, I was in my hometown, hanging out with my BFF, when she asked me “do you think he’d propose here?” All of a sudden, my overactive mind wheels started turning and I thought “why would she ask me? Does she know something? OMG, he is going to propose here.” Low and behold, he did. I was still surprised because he planned a really sweet proposal, but I KNEW. You know? I always over think things, and it makes it difficult to surprise me.

Last Thursday, I turned another year older…and I told the Mr. that he better surprise me. All week, he kept saying “well you always ruin surprises, so no.” He did have the day off, so I knew we’d do something, but I didn’t know what…and he kept saying he didn’t either. Of coarse, when he called me the day before and asked “did you use our computer today? Don’t!” I knew he was planning something, except this time, I didn’t snoop and ruin things. But I KNEW, ya know?

Thursday, the day I inched closer to 30, arrived and along with it came a few sweet surprises πŸ™‚

We spent a few hours exploring the MoMa in the city (floor 4,5,6=cool..lower floors? I just didn’t get it. A blank canvas on a wall? Weird…) and afterwards walked over to our favorite Happy Hour spot (McCormick&Schmick’s…$3.99 for a burger and fries? Yes please!) As we were enjoying our delicious spinach dip and truffle fries, the Mr. casually asked if I’d like to have afternoon tea at The Plaza. Ummm, YES! What girl would say no to this? We walked over to The Plaza, and really, I felt like a million bucks. It might be a “touristy” thing and all, but at that point, I didn’t care. It was so fancy and nice! Everyone looked very poised and classy (minus the one guy who was lounging on a chaise-like sofa with three girls all around him). There were a few “Mommy+Daughter” dates happening (dear future daughter-I hope you’ll like afternoon tea), a bridal shower (lucky gal), older ladies spending their retirement comfortably, and us. Right away, I noticed another birthday because the classy waiters (all older men) brought out a dessert tray with a candle, and sang “Happy Birthday.” I turned to my Mr. and said “Oh! I would love that!” and he looked at me like I was crazy and basically said “no way.” I decided to just accept my fate and enjoy my afternoon tea (The Fitzgerald is what we ordered-the famed author spent lots of time at The Plaza). Just as I stuffed my face with a dainty little cucumber sandwich, our waiter came out with another birthday dessert plate, and I died a little inside, since I knew that was not in my future..except that, it was! They came over and sang the song, gave me my dessert, and made me realize that my Mr. does know how to surprise me πŸ™‚ You might say, ok, what is the big deal? Well, it was to me and made me very happy πŸ™‚ I might be getting too old to get giddy over little things like this, or maybe one can never be too old to enjoy the love and attention of their loved one <3.

My handsome Mr. and I πŸ™‚

After we left The Plaza, we decided to go home and just relax. As we were squished like sardines on the N train, the Mr. suggested we get off at Union Sq. to use the bathroom at Nordstrom Rack (seriously, the cleanest bathrooms in the city). I was all game because I always have to go to the bathroom (too much info?), but I soon realized that we weren’t going to the bathroom, rather, we were walking towards the Regal theatre! We FINALLY got to see The Great Gatsby (and now The Fitzgerald tea package made sense:)! My take on the movie? Leonardo DiCaprio can do no wrong, great soundtrack, and I wish I was around during the “roaring 20’s.”

Walking out of The Plaza…can we pretend for a second that I’m some fabulous celebrity being caught off guard by the paparazzi? Maybe?

Feeling a bit short…(MoMa courtyard)

At The Rose Club..we were only supposed to use the restroom, but ended up staying for a while πŸ™‚

Maybe one day, I will live in a home with a foyer like this? Probably not. But a girl can only dream, right?

The famous “Starry Night” by Vincent van Gogh at the MoMa. I felt like such a tourist posing for this picture-and I annoyed a few actual tourist who were trying to take a picture without a stranger in it πŸ™‚

All in all, it was a very nice day. My Mr. is a keeper (but I already knew that the day I decided to marry him πŸ™‚ and I guess he doesn’t “hate” surprises as much as he tries to make me think. Oh, and did I mention what he got me? No? Let’s just say this Friday night, I’ll be singing “Suit & Tie” along with thousands of others at the Yankee Stadium.

Well folks, thank you for stopping by πŸ™‚ Come back soon for more adventures! There’s a BIG, and I mean BIIIIGGG adventure coming up. You won’t want to miss it πŸ˜‰
